Mat, of pandanus, from Tonga; part of the Forster collection (Forster 53; 1886.1.1176)

Plaited mat made from strips of pandanus leaf. Black-dyed strips have been used to create a geometric design over roughly half the surface. There are three finished edges, and one cut. The strips on the cut edge have been bound with plant fibre cord to prevent them from unravelling
