Mat, of pandanus, from Tonga; part of the Forster collection (Forster 55; 1886.1.1174)

Large fine mat plaited from strips of pandanus leaf. which average 2 mm in width. One long side is fringed, with additional sections of pandanus leaf added and held in place by a cord of plant fibre. The 'fringe' on the opposite side appears to be the result of the mat having been cut, with resulting unraveling.
