Barkcloth, ′ahu, from the Society Islands (probably Tahiti); part of the Banks collection (1886.21.17)

A finely beaten barkcloth (approx 7-9 beater marks per cm). The surface is covered in splashes of red dye or possibly blood. Fragments have been cut from the edges
