Eyeshade, of wood and coconut fibre, from the Society Islands (probably Tahiti); part of the Forster collection (Forster 136; 1886.1.1410)
The shade is formed from a light wooden frame, bound with coconut fibre cord, and an oval wooden ring, wrapped in the same way, bound to it. These frames create the shape of the shade, with a hole for the head. The peak of the shade is filled in with a mesh of coconut fibre cord formed by knotting
