Seat-belt holster (1999.33.48)

An ingenious example of recycling, this pistol holster and cartridge pouch are attached to a belt made from the seat belt of a Japanese-made car. The buckle is still used to fasten the belt around the wearer. The belt has been covered in synthetic leather material with additional pockets for individual cartridges. The holster and pouch have been stamped, stitched, riveted, and fastened with poppers stamped with ‘USA’ and a rough version of the American flag.

This object is not a one-off: in the leather-working area of Bazaar Serajan in Peshawar where it was purchased in 1999, similar examples were being made for local use.
