Son of Salim bin Kalut and half-brother to Salim bin Kabina, Muhammad bin Kalut was in his mid-twenties when he started travelling with Wilfred Thesiger (1960: 200). Amiable and easy-going, Muhammad bin Kalut joined Thesiger's 1947 Salalah to Al Mukalla expedition, the 1947–8 Second Empty Quarter Crossing, and Thesiger's 1949–50 journeys in the United Arab Emirates and Oman.
