Haji Mansur was the nakhoda, captain or skipper, of the dhow on which Thesiger sailed from Dubai to Bahrain in 1948. Although nearly blind, Haji Mansur could still navigate the coast by listening to the sailors' descriptions of the coastline and then giving orders for charting the boat's direction up the coast (1960: 258).
