Addington, Samuel The coin in Pitt-Rivers collection from the 'Addington cabinet' of coins was purchased from Sotheby's sale on 21 May 1883. This was a famous numismatic collection of coins collected by Samuel Addington that was dispersed over a number of occasions, the British Museum has some direct and some from Feuardent etc, others went to a Montagu. Most seem to have been sold in the 1880s. He also seems to have collected autograph letters. I presume he is the same man as described in the following website: Born in Little Gransden, Cambridge. Aller Vale Art Pottery Website cited says'John Phillips, owner of the Aller Vale Pottery at Kingskerswell and a supporter of the Arts and Crafts Movement and Morris’s ideals, seized the opportunity to produce art pottery at Aller when the pottery was rebuilt after a fire in 1881. At first the wares produced were rather crude and followed the Arts and Crafts tradition. The wares were made from clay found locally and decorated with slips and glazes made at the pottery. Phillips encouraged his local workers to attend the Cottage Art Schools held in the evenings at the neighbouring villages of Abbotskerswell, Kingskerswell and Coffinswell, to learn the craft of potting and other skills.' http://www.studiopottery.com/cgi-bin/mp.cgi?item=53 says: 'In the last decade of the nineteenth century the company gained public approbation when its wares were stocked by Liberty & Co. of Regent Street, London. After the death of Phillips in 1897, the company was acquired by Hexter Humpherson & Co., who amalgamated it with another of their acquisitions, Watcombe Pottery, and the new firm was known as Royal Aller Vale & Watcombe Co. The company continued to produce pottery until 1962.' Second collection After 1881
