All the bids, and who was successful

This page gives the details of the lots that were sold at the first day of a four-day auction at Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge in London [1-4 June 1883] of objects from Alessandro Palma di Cesnola and Edwin Henry Lawrence's collection. That is, items excavated by Cesnola, and sent to Lawrence in repayment for his support for Cesnola's excavations. These details are taken from a hand-annotated Sothebys auctioneer's listing. Copies of these are held at the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford though in fact the following table was compiled from a copy obtained via the British Museum.

We are very grateful to Thomas Kiely from the British Museum for sending us a copy of the annotated sale catalogue.

Rows in red = Pitt-Rivers purchases.

Summary:

Total taken in day from all sales = £236.2.0

Total number of successful bidders: 16

Names of successful bidders:

Brent. Probably Cecil Brent (?1828-?). F.S.A. Gave or sold objects from Kent to Pitt-Rivers’ founding collection. Possibly lived in Kent and then in Bristol. Civil servant. [Listed on RPR People Webpage] One of the subscribers to Alessandro di Cesnola’s Salaminia 1882

Brock –Edgar Philip Loftus Brock (?1833-1895) F.S.A. Antiquarian and architect. He is associated with objects in second collection of PR. [Listed on RPR People Webpage] one of the subscribers to Alessandro di Cesnola’s Salaminia 1882

Cash – Cannot trace

Ellis - Possibly Tristram James Ellis (1844-1922) London based landscape painter and watercolourist. wrote a book 13 etchings of the views and places of interest in Cyprus London 1879

Fenton – presumably means someone from Fenton and Sons, dealers based in Holywell Street and New Oxford Street, London. Sold Pitt-Rivers pieces for both collections [Listed on RPR People Webpage]

Fiveash - Cannot trace

Fry – Cannot trace

Lincoln – Possibly W.S. Lincoln and Son Dealers Numismastists and antiquaries

Minet – possibly William Minet, F.S.A. (1851-1933) an antiquarian, or possibly his father James Lewis Minet [1807-1885]. I think it more likely to be William.

Muller – possibly Eugene Guillaume Muller of 48 Great Russell Street, London. He sold Pitt-Rivers pieces for the second collection. [Listed on RPR People Webpage]

Or Frederik Muller / F. Muller and Sons, Dealers from London [poss the same firm as above?]

Or Henry Muller of Berners Street who was a curiosity dealer.

Pearson – possibly a dealers, as someone / some company called Pearson's were the source of 6 bronze archaeological objects from Cyprus in 1882 so the items were presumably resold them to Pitt-Rivers for second collection and may have been obtained at an earlier Cesnola-Lawrence sale [Listed on RPR People Webpage]

Ready – probably William Talbot Ready (1857-1914), he worked at British Museum as restorer but also dealt in objects.

Pitt-Rivers [See here for the details of his bids alone]

Roberts – Cannot trace

Way – Cannot trace [it is not Albert Way who died in 1874]. it could be a Way who was related to the R.P. Way who was dealing in the 1940s [thanks to Mark Westgarth for this suggestion]

?White – Cannot trace. Mark Westgarth suggests that this could be Thomas White of 12 Cross Street, Newington who was active in the 1860s, though he had been trading since the late 1830s so he might have been too old by 1883.
