Description Vanuatu, Penama (province), Pentecost carved wood club with sling of vegetable fibre. Length: 32.5 inches (from registration slip). Christy collection registration slip, 1880:
New Hebrides. Club of brown wood spreading out at the head where it is carved in relief on both sides in the form of a human face with pierced nose: a knob at the handle. Along the handle slides a sling of stuff bound with cord, for carrying the weapon. From Pentecost Island. "Carried hanging by sling over the cap of the shoulder hanging down behind: to use they are jerked back and slung over the head describing a circle, launched forward at the opponent, the sling slipping down the arm is caught in the hand and the club jerked back. They are very dexterous in the use of these clubs." Description that came with the club.

It is not known when this club was acquired, or from whom or why Pitt-Rivers donated it to the Christy collection. There are items listed in the black book at the Pitt Rivers Museum (ie that were displayed at Bethnal Green Museum / South Kensington Museum) that have not yet been identified at the Pitt Rivers Museum from the New Hebrides, but their descriptions do not match this object.
