Description

A snap-shot of a Luo man wearing a headdress decorated with cowry shells (ogut gagi) from which protrudes bunches of animal tail hair bound together on the ends of sticks. He is also wearing a long European overcoat (kabut). The two men in shorts standing beyond seem to be in local government employ of some sort. The man on the left has a traditional woven hat on which is stuck a number of warthog teeth (lak njiri) and probably a hippo tooth (lak rawo). Another hippo tooth hangs from the neck across his chest. The man's neck is heavily adorned by glass bead necklaces (tik ngut) and he is also wearing cowrie shell decoration over his hand. These two men are certainly elder men of status and may be dressed for a ceremony. [Gilbert Oteyo 9/9/2004 & CM 16/03/2007]
