This is a view of a Luo settlement earthwork called gunda bur (gunda being a abandoned home, bur the bank and ditch). People lived within the earthwork where houses were built and cattle were tethered, protected by the bank and ring-ditch (created by the excavation of earth to build up the bank). These structures were built by the Luo at the beginning of the 1700s and some remained occupied until the late 1800s. In the original notes, this photo is described as the 'old bur Asembo' and I am inclined to think that this is one of the old settlement locations of the Asembo clan. Many of these spectacular earthworks still exist in Asembo location up to this present day. [Gilbert Oteyo 9/9/2004 & CM 16/03/2007]
