Key Information

Photographer

Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard

Description

According to its original caption, this photograph was taken in connection with a ruined Luo stonewalled settlement of a type known as ohinga to archaeologists of the region, possibly at Kanyipir village. Such ruins are common in Luo country, particularly in South Nyanza District. Many of these settlements date to the nineteenth century and some may be contemporary with the earthwork settlements known as gunda bur, elsewhere photographed by Evans-Pritchard. The three men posing for the camera are unidentified, but they all appear to be in the employ of the colonial administration due to their clothing. The one on the left is wearing a chief's helmet (simba) and may be the man called Okoth identified in 1998.349.213. The man in the middle appears in 1998.349.215 while the other two appear in 1998.349.213. [Gilbert Oteyo & CM 11/04/2007]
