Key Information

Photographer

Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard

Description

An elder identified as Owoi (may be Owuor or Owor also in Luo) wearing a warthog or wild pig tooth (lak mbeche) hanged from the neck, standing between two Luo carved posts, referred to as 'murko' or 'muko' by Evans-Pritchard, although this term is obscure. Although the heavy bush around signifies a sacred place, these may be grave posts of important clan elders, as the dilapidated thatched hut to the right would not have been allowed to fall into disrepair if it was a ritual hut.
