This is a ruined Luo stonewalled settlement of a type known as ohinga to archaeologists of the region, possibly at Kanyipir village. The remains of this settlement today is even less marked than in this view. Such ruins are common in Luo country, particularly in South Nyanza District. Many of these settlements date to the nineteenth century and some may be contemporary with the earthwork settlements known as gunda bur, elsewhere photographed by Evans-Pritchard.
