Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard
A man is here seen in a sisal plantation. He is either attending to or cutting the sisal leaves. Sisal became a very important source of fibre for the Luo in their production of woven body adornments in the mid twentieth century. Belts, cattle tethering ropes, woven baskets and even women's skirts (chieno) were made of sisal. Sisal was a very important and expensive commodity in Luo Country as only a few people had cultivated the plants. Evans-Pritchard's note with this photo may be interpreted as 'ohinga' meaning a walled enclosure, but what this may refer to in this photograph is unclear. [Gilbert Oteyo 9/9/2004 & CM 10/04/2007]

The word Kangipir (Kanyipir?) appears in 1998.349.215 and in 1998.349.220 where in both cases it may refer to 'Ohinga' (stone walled settlement) of Kanyipir?" [Gilbert Oteyo 9/9/2004]
