Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard
A man working on his termite trap near Uyoma village in Alego, with two other men probably accompanying Evans-Pritchard, since one is holding his camera case. The harvesting of termites (bie) is common in many parts of Africa, and he has here trapped them by digging a hole in the ground and burying in it sticks and grass to entice the termites (chiko bie). He opens the hole the next morning and scoops all the termites into the basket next to him. The termites are used for feeding chickens, particularly young chicks, and also for feeding the domestic quill birds (aluru) kept in basket cages (sigol). [Gilbert Oteyo 9/9/2004]
