Description

This man is dressed in a long robe (kanzu or kandho) and wears a glass bead decorated hat (ogut tigo). This hat is only worn by men and not by women. Around his waist is a belt, probably of sisal fibre (okanda tworo), and he is holding his walking stick (luth) under his arm. On his feet he is wearing sandals made of animal hide or skin (wuoche pien). He is playing a wind instrument (oporo) which is made of animal horn at one end, and attached to a long hollow wood or bamboo pipe which he blows on the side. Such an instrument is usually played during funerals but also during other entertainment ceremonies. [Gilbert Oteyo 9/9/2004]

Research Notes

The original database entry states this photo as 'Jabaluo man playing wind instrument', although it unclear where this information comes from. It is possible the man is from the Kaluo Clan of Alego, therefore a 'Jakaluo' (man from Kaluo). [Gilbert Oteyo 9/9/2004 & CM 03/04/2007]
