Charles William Hobley
A portrait of a man wearing a skin body covering and hide hat, seated on the track leading to the administrative building at Kisumu. The original annotation to this photograph is that this is Chief Ondun of Kisumu. During the period in which Hobley took these photographs, there was a Luo Chief of Kajulu Luo clan called Ondu but it is not certain if this is him. At that time Kajulu was still part of the larger location of Kisumu but later became an administration location on its own. He is adorned in a full length cow skin (pien), sewn with beads and is wearing metal armlet and leg rings (minyonge) and bead-and-metal earrings (ngaga). His wide rimmed hat (ogudu) is also probably made of cow hide and he has a necklace made of reasonably large glass beads (tik ng'ut). His adornment certainly befits that of a chief or important clan elder. [Gilbert Oteyo & CM 04/05/2007]
