Description

A portrait of a man heavily adorned in cowrie shell (gaagi) strips across the chest and head, coiled metal ornaments on the arm, leg and ankles (minyonge), above which are tied metal jingles, and an ostrich-feather headdress (kondo udo). He also holds a wooden club, bound with strips of metal, which he holds resting on his knee. He has a dagger (pand ligangla) protruding from his waist and a number of split hippo teeth (lak rao) ornamenting his head. A woven basket (adita) rests on the ground next to him, possibly containing his essential items. A backdrop of white cloth has been placed behind him by the photographer so that the details of his costume are more visible. He is described as Ukeri, a professional buffoon, of Ugenya clan, which is today an administrative location within Nyanza. [Gilbert Oteyo 06/05/05 & CM 27/04/2007]
