Key Information

Photographer

Charles William Hobley

Description

A portrait of a young man wearing ostrich feather headdress and cowrie shell decorated chest ornaments (okanda gaagi), standing outside the administrative building in Kisumu. It is unclear whether he is a Luo or just from the wider Nyanza area. He also wears a goat skin lap covering and a string of waist beads. His hat of ostrich feathers and face decoration of ochre are like that of a warrior or a person ready to perform a ceremony. [Gilbert Oteyo 21/04/2005 & CM 24/04/2007]
